In response to the concern for exploited children in Alabama, the 1997 Alabama Legislature
enacted legislation to increase the legislative scope and authority of the Missing
Children Bureau in the Alabama Department of Public Safety. The 1997 legislation
established the Alabama Center for Missing and Exploited Children [ACMEC].
The program provides liaison among citizens, private organizations and law enforcement
officials regarding missing and exploited children information.
The ACMEC is located within the Alabama Bureau of Investigation's Criminal Information
Center and is a central repository of information regarding missing and exploited
children. The information is collected and disseminated to assist law enforcement
agencies, public and private organizations and the citizens of Alabama in locating
missing children. The ACMEC is utilized as a resource center and information exchange
service and complements the state and federal computerized missing person's files.
As part of the ACMEC's services, a toll-free WATS telephone line (800)-228-7688
is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Additional services provided by the ACMEC include a directory of resources available
for additional assistance in locating a child; emergency flyers requested by law
enforcement agencies containing descriptors of missing children believed to be in
immediate danger; training for law enforcement agencies and public / private organizations
regarding the operations of the ACMEC; and a child safety guide which includes a
list of precautions which outlines programs to insure our children's safety.
The ACMEC publishes a bulletin of missing children each month. Any law enforcement,
public or private organization may submit information to the bulletin. The bulletin
is distributed all over the United States to assist in the location of missing children.
ACMEC accepts cases that meet the following criteria:
